This paper discusses the most important topics or things that an international should know before arriving (highly recommended) or after arriving at UK. This paper helps students to resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing information and discussing in detail the local culture and environment. This paper also focuses on the UK culture which is an essential component that everyone should understand for a better living in the UK.
Finally it attempts to answer all the questions related to accommodation, employment, language and culture. This paper attempts to brief the issues relate to living and working in UK. As a masters student successfully completing the first semester I am briefing this to one of my friend who is willing to study in UK for higher education. I would like to brief living and working conditions in UK and would like to provide the details through this briefing paper to my friend Alex.
This briefing paper is an outcome of my experience for the past six months in UK and the things which I have learned from the UK environment and from literature. This paper would be serving for my friend as a new international student coming to UK and this can also be generalised to all international students which is highly an extract from the reliable sources. This would benefit most of the international students’ expectations which is common to a particular extent and this paper brings more about the common things that are related to international students.
Living and working in UK has become a major concern for the international students who come for higher education to UK. They have lot of aspirations before arriving UK and the expectation meter seems to be very high. This makes them bit concerned about their stay, work, adaptability to a vibrant culture, moving with an international community, different language and accent, economic climate, bank services, driving, immigration and nationality, challenging discrimination, important contacts, etc. ,
The information would serve as a supporting guidance to my friend Alex as well as for all the international students. Therefore this briefing paper would be an important documents for the international students those who are coming for the first time in to UK. However I would be attempting to brief the cultural and other issues to my friend as a personal briefing through out this paper. I would like to provide the following details to Alex so that he can have a clear picture of what is what before coming to UK.
Culture has been defined by many authors. According to the authors (ENR, 2003; Hofstede, 1997; Li ; Karakowsky, 2001) culture is referred to as “knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations, concepts of the universe, and material objects and possessions acquired by a group of people in the course of generations through individual and group striving.
Hofstede (1997) claimed that culture is a system of knowledge shared by large group of people. It is a way of life of peoples in group, “the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next” (Hofstede, 1997). He claimed that it also includes explicit and implicit patterns.
Li and Karakowsky (2001) defined that culture can be used for cultivating behavior; it can be use for learning purpose of a person in total, It is an accumulated experience which can be transmitted socially, or more briefly, behavior through social learning. He also claimed that it would be useful in representing a symbol of “skills, knowledge, attitudes, values, and motives” of a communication in a society. Therefore, culture is the sum of total of the learned behavior of a group of people that are generally considered to be the tradition of that people and are transmitted from generation to generation.
